Chroma Energy Group Powers Historic Sunsphere with Solar Installation
KNOXVILLE, TN (November 15, 2024) – Chroma Energy Group announces the completion of a landmark solar installation at Knoxville’s iconic Sunsphere, powering the newly constructed Welcome Center with clean, renewable energy. The 7.7-kilowatt AC system featuring 30 solar panels will generate approximately 10,124 kilowatt-hours annually, marking a significant step in downtown Knoxville’s clean energy initiatives.
The solar array, integrated into the Welcome Center’s entrance canopy, pays homage to the 1982 World’s Fair theme “Energy Turns the World” while demonstrating modern sustainable technology. The installation faces the Knoxville Convention Center on the east side of the Sunsphere, creating a visible symbol of Knoxville’s commitment to renewable energy.
“As Knoxville continues to position itself as a clean energy hub for businesses and residents, Chroma is honored to take part in this pivotal project for downtown Knoxville,” said Ed Rottmann, CEO of Chroma Energy Group. “This installation not only generates clean electricity but serves as an educational tool, demonstrating how solar power can be seamlessly integrated into historic structures while preserving their architectural significance.”
The solar installation is part of the larger Sunsphere renovation project, which includes the new Welcome Center opening on November 20, 2024. The system’s prominent placement at one of Knoxville’s most visited landmarks will help educate thousands of annual visitors about renewable energy technology and its benefits.
“This project showcases how historic preservation and clean energy can work hand in hand,” added Rottmann. “The energy generated by our solar installation will help power the Welcome Center while serving as a daily reminder of the 1982 World’s Fair’s forward-thinking energy theme. We’re proud to help carry that vision into the future.”
The Sunsphere solar installation represents Chroma Energy Group’s commitment to expanding clean energy infrastructure in East Tennessee. By incorporating renewable energy into such a visible and historically significant location, Chroma demonstrates how solar power can be successfully integrated into urban landscapes while preserving architectural heritage.
“It was an honor to be a part of a project at such an iconic landmark in Knoxville,” said site superintendent Josh Swiney. “I grew up seeing the Sunsphere, and to look at it now, knowing that my kids are going to grow up seeing it with the solar array on it, is a great feeling.”
